Vindolanda 2023 - Day Two

Very nice weather.  And the finds have been coming along despite our excavating in what was to some extent the "poor side" of the fort.  More specifically in this era (circa 222 AD) this part of the fort is felt to have been something of a refugee camp for displaced locals in unsettled times.

A bit of graffiti on a pottery vessel.  You wanted to get your stuff back.

A whoppin' big nail.  Although the buildings had stone foundations there was still plenty of wood in use.

Big chunks of an amphora, a large pottery jar.  Floor repair material?  Or some sort of "in floor" accommodation?

A small bit of silly.  Photographing the photographer.

A small bit of serious.  Every year I make a point of putting a few flowers on the grave of the unknown child murder victim.  I wonder if anyone else does?
