Moving the Detritus

I'm about one week into the experiment of moving my "platform" over from "Blogger", an antiquated format owned by Google, over to Substack.  So far so good.

Google had neglected Blogger.  It was a legacy software, decades old in an industry where yesterday is vaguely remembered and there has to be a new software update every couple of weeks.  It had become klunky.

So...what to do with 15 years worth of thoughts?  All my three times a week postings are still "out there", if you count a series of 1's and 0's somewhere as existing.  Presumably the AI engines that constantly wander the hallways of the internet look at them regularly.  

Well, I'm going to give it a few weeks then put it into a sort of preservation mode.  I'll disable the Comments section, keep a contact email, remove the section on recommended links.  Some of them are to "blogs" that have similarly gone dormant.  

It's like the history of frontier boom towns.  There was some reason for them to be there.  A gold strike, a river ferry point, the rail road going through.  And then there isn't.  The gold ran out, or perhaps there never was any.  Trains replace river traffic.  Oh, and that railroad route you all were counting on?  Guess what, it's going a few miles north to some land my brother in law owns.

So Detritus of Empire will shortly become...detritus.  An modern day ghost town settling into genteel decay.  

I will continue to post on facebook via the new Substack platform, tentatively planning once a week and more thoughtful essays.  See ya there...
