Vindolanda 2012 day one

Grey and windy but no rain.  A good start to the digging week.

I am down in a ditch, probably a defensive ditch to one of the forts (but which one?).  A good place for rubbish to end up, but that will be down at the bottom.

Various bits and bobs coming up, here is the rim of a Samian ware bowl coming up.  Just a rim, alas:
Most interesting find of the day was this:

This is a small lead phallus.  It was a mold for someone making bronze versions for decorative items.  The phallus of course was a famous Roman good luck symbol!

Brief posting for a few days as I sort out some pesky internet issues!
